It seems that whilst most of the people I speak to KNOW they should be eating “at least 5 portions” of fresh fruit and veg a day – they are even aware of the health benefits and yet they are still not doing it. When I ask them why, they usually say that they either (a) they consider they don’t have time (b) they are just not thinking about it!
With so much delicious fresh fruit, salad and veg in the markets at the moment, I thought I’d highlight a few simple steps you can take to consciously increase your intake. With only a few minor adjustments – and being more aware of what you eat – you could be eating your 5 a day in no time.
- Include fresh fruit as part of a healthy balanced breakfast. If you don’t have time to prepare a healthy breakfast, try a Herbalife Formula 1 Healthy Meal Shake with some fruit mixed in it, made with fresh juice or as an accompaniment if you are on the go! Formula 1 contains vitamins and minerals, including antioxidant vitamins C and E, and 9 g of heart-healthy soy protein. It also provides all the essential amino acids your body needs for good health and takes about 30 seconds to prepare – you can even do it on a train / bus. (Contrary to popular misconception, this is NOT strictly a weight-loss product, it is a balanced meal in a glass used by millions of people each day including MANY famous sports professionals.)
- Fill up your fruit bowl. Having a colourful bowl of various fresh fruit within easy reach throughout the day (on your kitchen table or office desk) should serve as a good reminder if you normally forget to eat fruit.
- Stop buying junk snacks! If you are prone to snacking on processed “junk food” containing salt, refined sugar and unhealthy fats, simply replace them with fresh fruit and veg on your shopping list! And don’t just stick to apples and pears – you can get so many delicious fruits, why not try something more exotic for variety?
- Be prepared! If you just can’t resist sugary or salty-tasting snacks, rather than cutting them out completely, include some healthier options along with your fruit – I’d recommend Herbalife’s High Protein bars and soybeans. These snacks are delicious and will fill you up for longer by providing soy protein as well as important vitamins and minerals to satisfy your body and help with the cravings for “junk food”. Pack some in your bag if you’re going out, it could prevent you from buying unhealthy food while you are on the move.
- If necessary, “hide” extra vegetables in your food - if you are someone that just doesn’t like the taste of vegetables, you can always ‘hide’ them into stronger tasting food – this works a treat for my toddler who inadvertently eats lots of broccoli (when it’s mixed with pasta and cheese sauce) and plenty of peppers, sweetcorn, mushrooms and tomatoes (when they are chopped up on a fresh pizza base and smothered in garlic)!
- Have a deliciously fruity dessert - like the sound of strawberries or pineapple and fresh ice-cream? How about adding blueberries and raspberries to a delicious yogurt? And probably the easiest dessert of all is a fresh fruit salad. Just chop it up and enjoy! Delicious – and a great way to eat more fruit!!!!!
