Do you know about the importance of calcium to support strong bones and teeth? Our bones are built to be strong but, if we don’t achieve adequate calcium intake as we age, bones can become fragile and break more easily. As bone density decreases with age, we need to continue building and strengthening our bones by maintaining good nutrition and intake of key nutrients. And with 99% of calcium stored in the bones and teeth, calcium is one important mineral!

Where is calcium found?
The richest sources of calcium are dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt. Some leafy green vegetables such as spinach and kale also provide calcium. But sometimes it can be a struggle to get enough calcium through food sources.

It’s recommended we get 800mg calcium each day. Three glasses of milk provide your daily calcium requirement, but how often do you drink this much milk? And every day?

When your diet alone is not enough, calcium supplementation may be a good option. This is ideal for those who have lactose intolerance, for vegans or if you’re at a certain life stage where extra calcium is needed, for example women over the age of 50 years.

Men: calcium is for you too!
Sometimes calcium is thought of as a mineral for women. While calcium is needed for women during certain life stages, it’s important to remember calcium is essential for the bone health and general health of men too.

For strong bones we need more than just calcium
Other nutrients like vitamin D3 and magnesium also play a key role in how the body utilises calcium: •    Vitamin D, obtained from sunlight, is used to optimise calcium absorption •    Magnesium supports the way calcium is used in the body
