Arginine Helps Older Cyclists Improve Performance

Avid cyclists over the age of 50 had an improvement in their performance after taking arginine supplements for three weeks, according to a study just published in the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

“As people age, their exercise capacity may decline – leading in turn to a decline in overall fitness that can impact health,” noted Luigi Gratton, MD, vice president of medical affairs at Herbalife.

A group of 16 male cyclists, aged 50 to 73 years, were randomly assigned to receive either the supplement (Niteworks; Herbalife International, Los Angeles, CA) containing 5.2 grams of L-arginine, or a look-alike placebo and instructed to continue with their usual cycling regimen over the three week study period. After three weeks, those taking the supplement had an increase in their anaerobic threshold – the point at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood, leading to fatigue.

“Arginine is involved in the production of nitric oxide in the body,” notes Gratton, “and nitric oxide has been associated with the improvement of exercise performance through its beneficial effects on the vascular system.” As people age, production of nitric oxide declines, so the researchers believed that arginine supplementation could support the production of nitric oxide and enhance performance.

The anaerobic threshold of the study subjects was assessed both before and after the three week study period. In those receiving the supplement, their anaerobic threshold increased by 16.7% after one week, and held steady during the three weeks, whereas those in the placebo group experienced no change. “This indicates a potential role for arginine in improving exercise performance in older subjects,” said Gratton, “and improved performance could mean better fitness and healthier lives.”

While increasing fruit and vegetable consumption remains a national priority, a new international survey has revealed the extent to which people are not meeting government guidelines on diet and nutrition in the UK.

Current recommendations are that everyone should eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables each day to reduce the risks of cancer, coronary heart disease and many other chronic diseases. The reality in the UK is that only 11% believe they actually achieve their 5 a day in a week.

The 2010 survey for Herbalife, revealed that 60% claimed their job or lifestyle made it too difficult to eat their 5 a day, despite accepting the benefits of balanced nutrition, while only 24% took nutritional supplements just in case.

While the most recent trends data suggest that women achieve more portions per day than men, this latest survey actually shows that women find it more difficult than men to include the recommended number of portions a day into their diet.

Women are notoriously more prone to stress eating than men and are more likely to develop unhealthy habits such as snacking on high sugar, high fat snacks when they juggle life or work long hours. More women than men blamed the expense of budgeting for 5 a day even though 93% of all women respondents considered the associated health benefits to be important.

But then there was still some confusion about what the government’s recommendations actually constituted. Over 75% incorrectly believed that eating 5 pieces of fruit would qualify. Dinner was considered to be the meal of least importance to both men and women in achieving 5 a day. Snacking was considered to be the most important with over one third seeing it as the most important way of getting their 5 portions a day.

Says Gavin Aley at Herbalife, “It’s clear that with today’s busy lifestyles most people still struggle to achieve their 5-a-day through fruit and vegetables. Real life demands a fast, simple, convenient alternative and that’s where nutritional supplements can help to support a healthy, balanced diet”.

There has been a “dramatic rise” in deaths in England in which obesity was a contributory factor, figures suggest.

Analysis of death certificates by a University of Oxford team found a year-on-year increase in obesity-related deaths between 2000 and 2006. In addition recent ministerial figures show 757 obesity related deaths in 2009, compared with 358 in 2000.

It comes as the Scottish government warned of a “ticking time bomb”, saying 40% of Scots could be obese by 2030.

The analysis of death certificate trends published in the European Journal of Public Health showed an average annual rise obesity mentions on death certificates of 8% for men and 4% for women. But there were likely to be many more such deaths where obesity was not recorded, the researchers said. One public health expert said people often did not realise obesity was linked with many serious conditions.

The researchers said as obesity was rarely listed as the main cause of death, a simple snapshot of death certificates would not have picked up the rise. The marked increase was apparent when they included contributing causes of death in the analysis.

Other figures recently released by ministers showed more than 190 people under 65 died as a direct result of obesity in 2009 compared with 88 in 2000. When contributing factors were included, there were 757 obesity related deaths in 2009 compared with 358 in 2000.

About a quarter of adults in the UK are now obese. Obesity and problems caused by being overweight are thought to cost the NHS more than £3bn a year.

The Scottish government said 40% of Scots could be classed as obese by 2030, if things do not change. Scotland’s Public Health Minister Shona Robison is due to launch an anti-obesity strategy later.

Study leader Professor Michael Goldacre said although the death certificate figures tallied with rises in levels of obesity in the population over the same period, they did not know before the study whether doctors would be recording obesity on death certificates. “We know for example obesity contributes to heart disease but if someone dies of heart disease you don’t necessarily expect doctors to note if they were obese. “But this shows doctors are increasingly recognising obesity as a cause of death.” He added: “One of the key messages is you can’t rely on underlying causes alone – if you don’t look at other causes you cannot see what is contributing to disease.”

Professor Alan Maryon-Davis, president of the Faculty of Public Health, said people in the “early stages” of obesity did not often realise how dangerous being overweight could be and their weight commonly “creeps up” without them noticing. People do not realise how closely linked it is with serious conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes. We have to take obesity seriously.”

The British Medical Association called for urgent action to address soaring obesity rates.

It is of little surprise to anyone who pays attention to what they eat (if I ever neglect to eat properly I find my tempter shortens very quickly) but here’s more evidence to support the importance of a healthy diet As a mum, I am particularly concerned about the food choices we make at home and how this will impact my children and so am very conscious of what they eat regularly. It’s also a difficult balancing act to let them try process food (when out/ at parties etc) to demystify it without it becoming something they are allowed too often.

Eating a diet high in processed food increases the risk of depression, research suggests. What is more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish actually had a lower risk of depression, the University College London team found.

Data on diet among 3,500 middle-aged civil servants was compared with depression five years later, the British Journal of Psychiatry reported. The team said the study was the first to look at the UK diet and depression. “ The UK population is consuming less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated fats and sugars ” Dr Andrew McCulloch, Mental Health Foundation

They split the participants into two types of diet – those who ate a diet largely based on whole foods, which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish, and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts, fried food, processed meat, refined grains and high-fat dairy products. After accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity, smoking habits and chronic diseases, they found a significant difference in future depression risk with the different diets. Those who ate the most whole foods had a 26% lower risk of future depression than those who at the least whole foods. By contrast people with a diet high in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate very few processed foods.

Mediterranean diet

Although the researchers cannot totally rule out the possibility that people with depression may eat a less healthy diet they believe it is unlikely to be the reason for the findings because there was no association with diet and previous diagnosis of depression. Study author Dr Archana Singh-Manoux pointed out there is a chance the finding could be explained by a lifestyle factor they had not accounted for. “There was a paper showing a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of depression but the problem with that is if you live in Britain the likelihood of you eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high. So we wanted to look at bit differently at the link between diet and mental health.”

It is not yet clear why some foods may protect against or increase the risk of depression but scientists think there may be a link with inflammation as with conditions such as heart disease. Dr Andrew McCulloch, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said: “This study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong links between what we eat and our mental health. Major studies like this are crucial because they hold the key to us better understanding mental illness.” He added people’s diets were becoming increasingly unhealthy. “The UK population is consuming less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated fats and sugars. We are particularly concerned about those who cannot access fresh produce easily or live in areas where there are a high number of fast food restaurants and takeaways.”

Margaret Edwards, head of strategy at the mental health charity SANE, said: “Physical and mental health are closely related, so we should not be too surprised by these results, but we hope there will be further research which may help us to understand more fully the relationship between diet and mental health.”

Average 50-something fitter than 25-year-old, study claims You may have seen the results of the latest Herbalife research in the press over the last few days. According to the study of 4,000 British adults, 50-somethings eat less calories, exercise more and eat less junk than people half their age.

Researchers found the average 25-year-old consumes over 2,300 calories a day, exercises only three times a week and munches on 12 types of junk food a month. But the typical 50-year-old has only 1,990 calories each day, does at least four forms of exercise and treats themselves to just one piece of junk food each week. And while those in their mid-20s have three takeaways a month, the older generation have only one.

The study, commissioned by global nutrition and direct selling company Herbalife, quizzed 4,000 Brits on their diet and lifestyle. Neil Spiers, Herbalife’s Regional Vice President, said: “The results of the study will be surprising to most as it’s natural to think that the younger you are, the fitter you are. It seems many young people are making the mistake of underestimating the benefit of a more balanced, holistic approach to diet and lifestyle. It’s great to think that the older generation are showing the youngsters the way when it comes to healthier living.”

The nationwide research of 16-80 year olds quizzed them on their health and exercise habits. It found the over-50s are more likely to walk as much as they can during the day – to the shops or with the dog – while those in their 20s tend to drive everywhere. But when it comes to excuses for not exercising, over a third (36 per cent) of 25 year olds blame not having enough time, compared to 22 per cent of over-50s. The research found 70 per cent of Brits see themselves as healthy – exercising for 27 minutes a day, at least three times a week, opting to go for a walk, run, cycle or gym. A quarter of Brits polled cycle to see friends or go to the shops, and 70 per cent take the stairs instead of the lift. Nearly four in 10 walk to the train station or to work in a bid to keep fit.

The study also found the average Brit believes they are overweight by nine pounds. Over a quarter of the population are currently on a diet – with the ‘low fat’ (30 per cent), ‘low carb’ (14 per cent) and ‘detox’ (eight per cent) diets being the most popular. And they would wish to lose 13 pounds for them to be their ideal weight.

The study also highlighted the lengths people will go to in order to hide their flab. Nearly a quarter have fibbed about the amount they eat, one in five has lied about their weight and 12 per cent have cut labels out of clothing which revealed their real size. A cheeky 16 per cent have turned to slimming aids without telling anyone and seven per cent have uploaded misleading pictures on Facebook.

And 30 per cent have ‘binge dieted’ to fit into a dress or to look good in a bikini in time for a holiday.

Very interesting reading, and not wholly suprising, judging from the conversations I’ve had with some of my clients.

new aviSo my beautiful daughter is 12 weeks old already (gulp) and I’ve decided it’s about  time I started getting back to my pre-pregnancy levels of fitness – and of course weight!

Until her current growth spurt is over (I’m breastfeeding) I will stay on core nutrition including just one shake a day – for good health – and my plan is to gradually start re-introducing more of the weight management products and cutting back on the “normal” food I’m eating, so that it doesn’t affect my milk.

I’m really looking forward to exercising at the gym and studio again, but know it’ll be a few more months before I can use the creche – also I am not ready to leave my baby girl yet, even if it is just for an hour! So here is what I’ve already started doing:

  • I babywear for several hours a day which is great for both of us and also means I can still get out and about with my pre-schooler. Yesterday we were chasing each other around the trees in the woods while the baby was fast asleep in the wrap – fabulous! You can read my previous post on babywearing benefits here.
  • I’ve downloaded a load of Yogamazing podcasts onto my laptop and iPhone (you can subscribe at iTunes too), so I can do a quick workout whenever I get the chance – which means the rare occasions both kids sleep at the same time! I also have a child’s yoga mat so my son can “join in” if he wants to (!)
  • As well as my beloved and much-used Fitflops, I’ve got a pair of the new Sketchers Shape-ups . I am already a fan of MBTs but have to say I prefer these (surprising for me as the Sketchers are much cheaper, and I normally have expensive taste!!!) – as they are not so obviously ‘unbalanced’ making it easier to walk with them from day one, and in my opinion, not taking very much getting used to (although I confess to not having watched the DVD that comes with them). I also think they look more like trainers than MBTs – my husband usually makes disparaging remarks when I wear the MBTs, but thinks these look nice. I’ve been using them for a couple of weeks now and they are absolutely great – I would highly recommend them if you’re looking to get into shape and want to make the most of your regular activities. I can actually feel the muscles in my legs have had a work-out when I’ve worn them! And I suppose I can’t say all that without a picture now, can I?  These are the same as mine:shapeupsNice eh? (I  got them from www.fitnessfootwear.com who in my experience are very quick to deliver and always give excellent service as well as good pricing.)

I think when you’re a new mum, especially when breastfeeding and you have more of an appetite and less time to prepare healthy food, it even more important to watch what you’re eating, and I must admit that I haven’t always followed my own advice in the last three months!

I’ll try to post regular updates over the nex few months, although I can’t post as regularly as I did before I entered the realms of two children – which is a whole new ball-game!

Hello!! Firstly, I must apologise for my tardiness – it has been AGES since my last post. so I’ll get straight to it.

My daughter, Amelia, was born at the end of April after a really great pregnancy! In total contrast to last time, my “Herbalife” baby was born naturally weighing a healthy 7 lbs 14 oz. I am so pleased that I not only managed to go to full term this time, but things were healthy enough for me to be left to have a spontaneous labour at 41 weeks and a VBAC delivery. I can’t tell you what a relief this was after my first pregnancy which was plagued with ill health and ended in a failed early induction and emergency c section (see previous posts for further details).

The last 3 weeks have been a bit of a blur as we’ve been settling into our new routine as a family of four! It’s true that having 2 is much more hard work than having 1 +1 but it’s all good, and I’m loving being mum to a little baby again, now that my 2 year old is fiercely independent and wiping my kisses off!

Amelia is an exclusively breastfed baby so continuing to benefit from the Herbalife products even outside the womb – she’s gaining weight VERY well and is perfectly proportioned… and gorgeous (well, we think so!)

I haven’t been on a weighing scales since before I was pregnant and am not worrying about weight loss for a few more weeks – once I’ve had my 8 week check-up I’ll start exercising again and revert to two shakes a day (at the moment I am still having one shake a day at breakfast time for good health and supplementation) although I’ll be eating more calories than when I was previously losing weight and having additional protein to maintain a healthy milk supply. Watch this space for my post-pregnancy weight loss progress – starting some time in July.
